Frequently asked questions

Q1) I am a home care worker and currently undertaking my NVQ Care, level 3. I am having trouble getting witness statements. What should I do?

A1) You could always ask another carer that you work with to sign your statements, or maybe even one of your clients, for whom you care for, could write or sign your statement .

Q2) One of my Care Assistants is currently undertaking her NVQ Care, level 2 at the local college. She has been asked by her assessor to answer the following question: "who regulates food and drink and what is the care workers role and responsibilities". Can you help?

A2) The Food Safety Act 1990, covers food, she could refer to this, as well as the Health AND Safety at Work Act 1974, which refers to risk assessment when dealing with food and drink. Duty to care is also important. Regarding the role and responsibility of the care worker, this will depend very much on the type of care being provided and the level of support being given with food and drink. Your care assistant should always consider policies and procedures, risk assessment, reporting of incidents and Training.

Q3) I have not seen my Care Assessor for 3 months, I was off sick for one month and when I came back, my assessor said she was leaving and would find somebody to take over. I have to finish my NVQ level 2 by Christmas, what can I do?

A3) I am sorry to hear you are having problems. I suggest you put your concerns in writing to your NVQ Assessment Centre. You should have received a copy of a complaints procedure for your centre, that will provide you with the information you need.

Q4) I am a new Internal Verifier and would like some advice on how I can ensure assessors have the appropriate technical and vocational experience to assess?

A4) I suggest you have a personal interview with your assessors and ask them questions against the NVQ units. You should also view their curriculum vitas. I hope this helps.

Q5) I have just been told by my assessor that I have to do my own cross referencing for my NVQ in Early Years Care and Education Level 2. My assessor has done a little bit for me, but she says she's not sure what to do and each candidate should do their own. I feel stupid as I am getting nowhere and want to pack the whole thing in. What should I do?

A5) I am sorry that you feel like this. Your Assessment centre should be giving you support with cross referencing . It may be worth speaking to your Internal Verifier or Centre Coordinator. The end result of an NVQ is to demonstrate your job competence, not, putting together a portfolio and cross referencing.

Q6) In the A1 award does there have to be a separate statement from the IV to say the assessor candidate has attended the standarisation meeting, or are the minutes of the meeting sufficient if signed by the IV?

A6) Yes, there does, but it could be any IV in the centre.

Q7) If a candidate for the registered manager award has already completed some units of the mandatory core in another award such as B3 in a management NVQ can this be counted as the "independently assessed" unit?

A7) Yes.

Q8) Does a Registered Manager, have to have a "certificate" to prove they meet the requirements of the CSC?

A8) No, the advice(CSC 05/03) says they have to " show they meet the requirements". However their needs to be proof that these requirements have been met. So the RM would need a portfolio plus their professional certificates and the "Inspector" would have to take the time to judge it against the standards!!

Q9) If a Registered Manager has the "professional requirements" and the "management qualification at level 4" and they complete the advised units (CSC 05/03) for the Reg. Mgr. Qualification, why don't they get a Registered Managers award certificate, rather than only unit certificates?

A9) The only way they could get the full cert. is if either their existing qualifications can be tracked and APL'd to the award or their Qualifications are NVQ's and thus include the units already accredited.
